Interview: Mikey Phillips, Celebrity MUA.

"I have been known to turn a pimple into a beauty spot." Mikey Phillips.

Incredibly talented, hardworking, and genuinely lovely - these are just a few words that I would use to describe Mikey Phillips, celebrity makeup artist to the stars of today.

Credited with glamming the likes Charlotte Crosby, Ferne McCann, Vicky Pattison, Sam Bailey, Billie Faiers, Sam Faiers, Binky Felstead, Danielle Armstrong, Georgia Kousoulou, Pete Wicks, Amy Childs, Bianca Gascoigne and so many more - It’s fair to say Mr Phillips knows a thing or two about beauty.

Dedicated to making the world look beautiful, he literally works every hour that God sends. I call him SuperMUA, the machine of makeup, as I genuinely believe he possesses some kind of superhuman powers.

In demand, 12 years of sheer determination has seen this self-taught glam guru rise into one of our generations leading male makeup artists.

Mikey’s story is inspiring, with no formal beauty-based qualifications he has proved if you work hard, dream big (and be nice!) absolutely anything is possible.

I caught up with the man himself to talk backstage secrets, divas, and dreams for the future.

"Bobbi Brown is a classic brand that does a lot of products really well!" Mikey Phillips.

Who was your first EVER celebrity client?

My first ever Celebrity client was Amy Childs! I literally met Amy in her salon and convinced her I needed to do her makeup .... I've now been working with Amy for over 5 years.

Do you get star-struck when meeting new celebrity clients for the very first time?

I don't get star-struck but even more embarrassing ... Say it was a musical artist ... I literally start humming and singing their songs whilst I'm glamming them! Good job they find it hilarious!

Ever had to deal with a diva?

Worst person I've ever had to work with was a TOWIE star who literally thinks she's bigger than Beyoncé! It was the worst 8 hours I've ever had to go through, she even made me cry!

Favourite shoot of all time?

Oooo that's a hard one .... There have been so many ... But one that stands out would be Binky Felstead for the cover of FHM .... Binky is a regular of mine but this shoot was a little risqué and we really saw Binky looking very sexy and glam and very different to her usual look. We also worked in an Amazing location with an incredible photographer.

Past or Present - If you could paint any face in the world, who would you pick?

Easy! It's KYLIE! I've been obsessed with Kylie Minogue since I was 11 years old! I still think she is the most beautiful woman on the planet!

If you could ONLY have 1 item in your makeup kit - what would you choose?

I can't choose! But if I had 1 versatile product it would be a concealer. I could use it to brighten, perfect and highlight at least :)

Committed any beauty blunders?

God yes, and I will hold my hands up! I've fallen victim to the dreaded HD powder being picked up on the red carpet with a flash - leaving my celebrity client with two massive white triangles under her eyes! It happens to the best of us!

If you could be in anybody shoes for the day, who would it be and why?

Definitely Kylie's makeup artist Christian Vermaak. I would love to see how Kylie is to work with and how he glams her! She always looks incredible and that would be a dream come true!
Kylie Minogue and Christian Vermaak. Image Credit: @mrvermaak Instagram.
If you could learn any new skill, what would it be?

I would love to learn how to do box braids! The Kardashians have made them so popular and I just haven't mastered them yet!

A beauty product that doesn't exist, but you wish it did?

I would love a waterproof foundation that gives you a flawless coverage and a glow ... But that you could also use it on your body! MAC face and body is good but this would be a super charged version!

Favourite makeup brand?

Hard to choose one as I have so many products, from pretty much every brand ... But I think Bobbi Brown is a classic brand that does a lot of products really well !! Amazing foundations, powders, bronzers... Gel liners the list goes on ...

What are your top five makeup brushes?

Ooooo love MAC 217, Bobbi Brown Blending Brush, Charlotte Tilbury Powder & Sculpt, Real Techniques Contour Brush, and Rodial the Foundation Brush.
L: Charlotte Tilbury Powder and Sculpt Brush R: MAC 217 Brush
A client arrives with a huge pimple, how do you approach the pesky zit?

Hmmmm it doesn't freak me out and I have been known to turn it into a beauty spot!!! I wouldn't cake it in makeup I would do a statement eye or lip to detract from it.

Skincare saviour?

Rodial!! I'm obsessed with pretty much everything they do but especially the Dragons Blood range, I also Love Zelens!
Rodial Dragons Blood Range
Celebrity Crush?

Probably my original crush ... Tom Cruise! You can't beat him in Cocktail or Top Gun!

A few glasses of wine with friends or a crazy night out?

My favourite night out would be dinner with processcco and a few cocktails followed by a west end show or concert.

X Factor or The Voice?

Urghhhh neither - I prefer a good Netflix binge! These shows are so fake!

Song you’re obsessed with?

Sia "Chandelier" !! It's always in my head, as is Kylie's "Slow".

Favourite Movie of all time?

This is too tough! Dirty Dancing, Grease, Bridesmaids - don't make me choose!

Dreams for the future?

I would love to have some of my own products! I've actually started working on ideas and concepts! It won't be a full range but just some key AMAZING products! Aside from that, I love what I do and feel lucky that I do a job I love, so it never feels like work.

Benefit 2016 Christmas Collection & Advent Calendar

The launch of all these amazing Christmas collections has left us feeling totally spoilt, but one brand we’ve all been desperate to hear about is the King of Christmas gift sets itself, Benefit! Well, my loyal Benebabes, the wait is finally over as I have all you need to know about their amazing 2016 collection, which is set to turn heads!

The collection includes a whole range of makeup for the face, lips and eyes and comes in 10 super-quirky styles, filled with a mix of best sellers and some never-before-seen exclusives. The theme is so eye-catching - it reminds me of those cute, little Russian dolls (you know, the doll-in-a-doll). It’s really unique and incredibly fun, the little characters bring a real sense of the 90’s to the collection - I can’t help but smile when I see them!

Sometimes products can look great in photos but end up being such a disappointment in real life, but this certainly isn’t the case here - I think this collection actually looks BETTER in person! They are so aesthetically pleasing to my beauty-loving eyes!

I’ve received two preview samples and I have to say, I’m really impressed – they definitely get a big thumbs up from me. Zoella Lifestyle & 2016 Christmas Collection

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that the Queen of YouTube, Zoella, has made quite a name for herself over the past few years. Not only is she one of the world’s most famous vloggers with over 11 million subscribers, she also has a best-selling novel and a hugely successful beauty range under her belt too. Now, Zoella is really putting her stamp on the beauty industry with the launch of her new (and absolutely HUGE!) Autumn/Winter 2016 collection! Who’s excited?

Zoella has been keeping the collection under wraps for the past year and has been secretly working hard to develop the range – I don’t know where she finds the time! It’s clear to see that Zoella has spent a huge amount of time perfecting the products and even fooled fans by sneakily including some of the items in her recent videos, without them even realising! The collection is jam-packed full of lifestyle treats and some really exciting Christmas pieces, from luxury home essentials to the perfect crimbo gift set.

Let’s discover some of my personal favourites from the collection and ‘step inside the extraordinary’..

Lazy Days Set, £16

Appropriately named, this set includes a linen and cotton-scented candle and a soft sock set, perfect for those lazy duvet days!

Warm Hands, Warm Heart Set, £14
Ok, so the duvet day is over and you actually need to leave the house. Why not take the comfort outdoors with this ‘topped with cream and sprinkles’ travel mug and adorable knitted fingerless gloves set? Perfect for those cold, winter mornings!

Pottering Around, £10
These adorable decorative storage pots can be used for absolutely anything; plants, makeup brushes, pens and pencils… There are two to choose from; Blooming Marvellous which comes in Rose Gold and Pick Me which has a marble design – a massive trend for 2016!

Naps Fix Everything, £12
We all need a bit of time-out! The Naps Fix Everything pillow is for those ‘just 5 minutes’ moments.

Candle and Diffuser Collection, £10/£12
Included in the collection are a number of scented candles, personally named by Zoella herself! I love the unique design of each box – they open to reveal a hidden picture that really tells you the story behind the fragrance.

Daisy picking: a scent of fresh meadows, allowing you to keep hold of those summer memories for a little while longer!

Lazy Day: which is the candle included in the Lazy Days gift set, mentioned above. Ooh, so clean!

Seaside Stroll: a scent of fresh air and ocean mist – oh I do like to be beside the seaside!

Gingerbread Village: it doesn’t get more Christmassy than this – a sweet and spicy fragrance with scents of ginger, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. All we need now is a mince pie!

My Eden: a floral scent and one of Zoella’s favourites, inspired by the smell of her Mum’s Wiltshire garden, also available in a gift set!

Homemade Treats: a scent of indulgent home-baked cupcakes – good enough to eat! Sadly, only available in the diffuser at the moment!

Deck the Baubles, £6
Time to get festive! This is a bauble with a twist, filled with spicy gingerbread and warm vanilla bubble bath – perfect for those cold and dark winter evenings!

Jo Malone 2016 Christmas Collection - The Scented World Of Christmas Wonder.

With so many exciting collections being released this Christmas, it’s difficult to even know where to begin! Well guys, that decision is about to get even harder as I’ve got details of another fab launch to throw into the mix - it’s one we’ve all been desperate to hear about.

Luxury brand, Jo Malone, invites you into the scented world of Christmas wonder as they reveal their phenomenal new collection! The range is made up of some amazing BRAND NEW products, along with the return of some old favourites which will be available in a super-slick Christmas style. They’ve gone all out this year and we can expect candles, colognes, creams and Christmas crackers, all presented in a striking and sophisticated gold and black harlequin print, complete with a matching bow! What’s great is that there’s definitely something here for everyone!

The collection is absolutely huge with so much to choose from - I could really talk for days, so I’m just going to highlight a few of my personal favs!

Orange Bitters Cologne £90

First up is the Orange Bitters Cologne which forms part of the Bitters Collection. It’s a brand new scent and the first ever Christmas cologne from Jo Malone. It’s an infusion of sweet orange and fresh mandarin with a bitter twist, presented in a jazzy-looking checked print bottle which follows the same design as the whole collection. It’s a limited edition cologne which is set to be a very popular choice this year.

Orange Bitters Christmas Candle £120

Worried you can’t get enough of the cologne then fear not, as the scent is also available in a candle. The Orange Bitters Candle comes in a slick, reusable ceramic pot. Whilst it’s a bit pricey, it’s a 420g candle so will last a pretty long time. The scent contrast also means that this candle is not just for Christmas and would be suitable right through to Spring. I have a feeling this is going to be on a lot of people’s Christmas list!

Scented Ceramic Christmas Ornament £32

Are you always left with an empty spot on the Christmas tree that you just can’t work out how to fill? Or just fancy a new luxury decoration? This Pine & Eucalyptus Christmas Ornament is 100% the answer. The festive scent will completely fill the room to give a real Christmassy vibe – let the festivities begin!

Christmas Ornament £22
The Christmas Ornament includes a really cute Peony & Blush Suede Cologne and a Grapefruit Body Crème. Wrapped in a gorgeous prism-shaped box, it’s a great value item which is sure to be a big hit.

Miniature Candle Collection, £66

I absolutely adore this Miniature Candle Collection which is made up of 5 miniature candles and presented in a magical carousel-like box. Jo Malone has carefully selected the scents here as it includes some of our absolute favourites including Pomegranate Noir, Peony & Blush Suede, Green Tomato Leaf, Sweet Almond & Macaroon and Frosted Cherry & Clove.

Christmas Cracker £33
Fed up of pulling crackers just to find fake moustaches, tiny plastic combs and oversized paperclips inside? Your luck is about to change… Pick up Jo Malone’s Christmas Cracker where you’re guaranteed to find something gorgeous inside, including a Basil & Neroli Cologne, Blackberry & Bay Body and Hand wash and a Mimosa & Cardamom Body Crème.

Giant Christmas Cracker £206
Fancy something even more extravagant? Why not opt for the GIANT version which is the ultimate cracker experience. The giant cracker includes a 100ml Cologne, a 175ml Body Crème, a 200g candle and a 250ml Body and Hand wash, all completely of your own choice so it can be totally personalised – Merry Christmas!

Victoria Beckham x Estée Lauder Makeup Collection

She came into our lives 20 years ago as the ‘posh one’ from the Spice Girls and went from Wannabe to global sensation pretty much overnight. Since then she’s been busy taking the fashion industry by storm, becoming an internationally recognised style icon, not to mention one of the world’s most successful female fashion designers! Now, Victoria Beckham strikes again as she joins forces with world-famous beauty brand, Estee Lauder, with the launch of their fantastic new #VBxEsteeLauder collection.

This limited edition industry-first is a 14-piece collection which includes a whole range of make-up for the face, lips and eyes. It has been split into various looks to represent some of Victoria’s favourite fashion capitals; London, New York, L.A. and Paris. On revealing this super-exciting news, Victoria said “I want to make women feel empowered, to feel sexy and confident. This make-up does that. I love to make women feel like the best version of themselves”.

Victoria also revealed that her range is inspired by products she “wanted to wear herself” and “all the little tricks” she learned from legendary makeup artists throughout her career in front of the camera, including Charlotte Tilbury, Pat McGrath and Val Garland.

Let’s ‘Stop!’ And have a look then…

Morning Aura illuminating Crème £68
This 2-in-1 moisturiser and primer contains micro-pearls which help to illuminate and brighten the skin. It also hydrates and tightens the skin, leaving you with an impossibly fresh, morning glow. The crème will also look amazing on your dressing table as it just oozes luxury with its gorgeously golden packaging!

Modern Mercury Highlighter £48
Back, following its limited edition success, this VB fave from Estee Lauder can help to create a healthy glow and is perfect for creating the appearance of chiselled cheekbones. This rose gold highlighter comes in a gorgeous, expensive-looking compact that screams class, but would we really expect anything less from the fashionista that is Mrs B?

Java Sun Bronzer, £48
This has to be one of my personal favourites from the collection! It’s a matte bronzer and doesn’t have any shimmery particles, so is just perfect for guys and girls who wants to create a subtle and natural sun-kissed glow – perfect for contouring too!
Eye Ink in Black Myrrh £36
A highly pigmented black gel for those fierce, smoky and sexy eyes that Beckham is so famous for! It has a pressed gel-cream formula that will just coat your eyelids and can be used dry or wet for an intense finish. Definitely one for the London look!
Eye Metals £36
The perfect eyeshadow for a precious metal finish with strong and sexy eyes, available in Bitter Clove and Charred Emerald. The theme of the packaging is pretty consistent throughout the collection which isn’t a bad thing as you’re going to get a touch of that VB style, no matter which product you go for!
Eye Foils £28
Liquid eyeliners infused with sparkling pigments and splashes of gold and silver to deliver a metallic shine, available in Burnt Anise and Blonde Gold.

Eye Palette £68
Spice up your eye! The six high-end eyeshadow colours from this palette can be applied wet and dry. The palette consists of Fired Sapphire, Blonde Cumin, Metal Saffron, Burnished Sage, Grey Amber and Black Nutmeg. The shade selection is great - I think they will be universally flattering for many different eye colours. This is sure to be an immediate sell-out!

Eye Kajal Duo in Black Saffron/Vanille, £22
This double ended pencil delivers a soft texture which can be used as a liner and brightener, both day (Vanille) and night (Black Saffron). This is so much more than just a pencil – you can tell this girl has style!

Lipstick, £36
Two lipsticks that everyone will be talking about - the Brazilian Nude for a more natural look and Chilean Sunset for a bolder, more modern look. Following a similar design to the illuminating crème packaging, this collection is so impressive!

Lip Pencil in Victoria £22
VB’s signature nude-matte pencil which can be worn every day to create a fuller-looking pout *mwah*

Lip Gloss in Moroccan Heat, £28
A warm, nude lip gloss with high shine for a polished look, with Estee Lauder’s signature fig scent – divine!

The #VBxEsteeLauder collection will land in stores on 13 September, including the Victoria Beckham boutiques in London and Hong Kong. They will also be on sale online at victoriabeckham.com and esteelauder.co.uk.

Here's what it really costs to be a beauty blogger

Feature in MIC Style

Jake-Jamie receives most of his beauty products for free now. "Even when I need to top up on favorite products, a lot of brands will still send these out complimentary because they want you to keep using those products in future posts, too," he said. "I would say I probably receive roughly £500 (about $660) worth of complimentary beauty products a month — so around £6,000 (about $7,940) per year."

But Jake-Jamie has also invested in an at-home studio. "When I first started out, I used to record and edit all of my videos on an iPad," he explained. "As time has gone by, and the blog has grown, I have been able to invest bit by bit and upgrade my equipment. I now have a studio that has been created in my house dedicated to the blog with lighting, the best cameras, a Mac computer, a green screen."
